There is a reason why the Milford Sounds is considered one of the top destinations in the world.
Its almost impossible to take a bad picture in Milford Sound, everything here is incredibly picturesque. The only and best way to see it it get one of the many different cruises that will take you out between the towering cliffs. Its is quite breathtaking and definitely one of the many places that you should see in your lifetime.
It is one of the many places in New Zealand that will look good in both winter and summer, but if you manage to go on a sunny day with clear blue skies it will definitely look more impressive.
The cruises will take you out to see all of the mountains and waterfalls that enclose the sound and depending on the cruise that you pick they may also include food for either lunch or dinner.
On your trip back I would also highly recommend taking the chartered plane if its within your means. It delivers another unforgettable experience after visiting Milford Sound.
How to get there?
It is 119 kms from Te Anau by car which will take you about 2.5 hours to drive. However if you do not wish to make the drive yourself, there are numerous bus tours that leave from common tourist destinations like Queenstown. Many of the bus trips will offer extras such as chartered flights on the return journey that are definitely worth it. See my other post for information about the flights.
When you are there you are going to want to get one of the cruises to see the sound itself, and there is no shortage of choice.
There is a cafe and restaurant available in Milford Sound also.
A few other things to note, there is no cell phone coverage there, and the last place to buy fuel for your car is in Te Anau, so fill up before you travel.
