Welcome to the epic Putangirua Pinnacles. These amazing geological formations are one of the locations where The Lord of The Rings was filmed in New Zealand. To get there it is quite a hike walking up through and over a small stream and up the side of the hill to get to the Pinnacles themselves, but it is most definitely worth it. The geology is quite spectacular and not like anything you will see anywhere else. It is one of the best examples of geological erosion you will see in New Zealand. It is quite hard to express and capture the magnitude of the Pinnacles in text and photo form, but even these photos show how impressive it is.
If your feeling even more in the mood for a hike. you can climb the steep track up to the lookout point, and get to see the Pinnacles from above. This is not a hike for anyone who is afraid of heights though as you will be walking on small narrow paths with almost vertical drops just a meter away. If you enjoy walking on the edge of cliffs though you will enjoy the walk.
The view from above is equally impressive as you look down on the rock formations.
Where is it?
This is located 45 minutes drive south of Martinborough, and is quite out of the way. It takes about an hour and a half to get here if you are travelling from Wellington. As you are going to be doing a hike, its best to tell people where you are going and to bring food and water.
